It has been decided that New York City, possibly the premier city in food drink...at least in my humble opinion, will be the first destination on this road trip. We intend to spend most of our money on eating and drinking we have been conveniently blessed with a free place to stay: Madison's (the aforementioned roommate) Grandmother's apartment. Located at 10 Park Avenue, we will be provided with a central location. Although, we might be getting ahead of our selves. First we need to arrive in New York City.
So after loading up the car with the essentials, we will hit the road on the first of many long drives. The drive to New York city from Toronto takes approximately 8 hours. The intended route is easily found on Google Maps, thanks to the convinces of the Internet no need to fumble around with a giant map! Here is the route I intend on taking: http://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&q=Toronto+to+NYC+NY&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1277&bih=474&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=FLJgT4GBOeHV0QGQxaz_CQ&sa=X&oi=mode_link&ct=mode&cd=3&ved=0CBkQ_AUoAg
A car in New York City? Impossible! However, I intend to spend the money I would have spent on a Hotel, on parking my car. I was also fortunate enough to find a parking coupon site, saving money is key when planning a road trip. This is where I so conveniently found a parking garage: http://nyc.bestparking.com/index.php#1. For 4 Days I can park my car for 170$, not per day for the full four days. While I assume that this does not permit in-out privileges, New York is more than public transit accessible. A New York City Metro pass, for unlimited 7 day rail is 29 Dollars.
Once arrived in New York City and after settling down for a brief moment (for the "typical" road trip is not about settling down anywhere) the eating will begin!
The first stop: Katz's Deli, http://katzsdelicatessen.com/, Located at 205 East Houston Street NY NY. What's a better way to welcome yourself to New York City than with a big FAT pastrami sandwich and a bowl of Matzo-Ball soup. Not only is this a New York staple, from Harry Met Sally to the age of this establishment. Along with our road trip pocket friendly trip, Katz's is highly affordable place to eat. Soups costing around 6 dollars, while sandwiches costing about 16 and for New York, that's pretty affordable.
Some of the other New York Food institutions we intend to visit over our 4 day stop in New York City are:
Num Pang Vietnamese Sandwich shop: http://www.numpangnyc.com/. I know it may seem that we are only eating sandwiches on this trip, handheld food is a way to my heart. Num Pang offers Asian style french influenced street food. The sandwiches have pickled veggies, sticky saucy meats and crisp warm baguettes. This is a grab and go kind of place which fits perfectly in to New York's fast paced style. Again this is a fairly affordable place to eat with sandwiches ranging from 7-10 dollars.
Jones Woods Foundry: http://www.joneswoodfoundry.com/. Jones Woods foundry offers a distinct look into the way the British eat, allowing for a cultural experience within another one. Jones woods is known to have great traditional British pub food. While it is not in the most exciting neighbourhood, the Upper West side, the traditional menu is quite unique. Their savoury pies are said to be delicious, made with spices and TWO different types of pie crusts. Jones Woods Foundry makes handmade and freshly made crumpets, as well as sticky toffee pudding. Both their savoury and sweet dishes are traditional and artfully made. While this restaurant is likely to be one of the more expensive restaurants we will visit, costing anywhere from 35-50 dollars a person (depending alcohol consumption).
Hill-Country Chicken: http://www.hillcountrychicken.com/. Hill Country chicken brings a taste of the South up North, while we do intend to visit the south, nothing wrong with trying a northern take on southern comfort. Hill Country chicken offers obvious classics like fried chicken and collard greens they also offer beer-can game hens. Hill Country Chicken is a small taste of southern comfort in the big city, with its traditional sides and newfangled dishes. They offer highly spiced foods as well as many styles of sauces...although Texas BBQ is typically dry rub. Hill Country has a unique and fun atmosphere bringing a taste of the south to New York City.
Another institution we wish to visit is in Queens, Called Arancini Bros http://www.arancinibros.com/, they offer adorable, deep fried Risotto balls, for those of you who are unfamiliar. This eclectic take on a traditional Italian staple, bringing two sides of New York together, an in your face Italian attitude riddled with tradition and an eye for the new and creative.
We Also intend on finding an assortment of food trucks (including but not limited to): The Big Gay Ice Cream Truck, Schnitzel and Things, Van Leeuwen Ice cream truck. Each providing a very different and tasty take on New York street food.
Over all this stay in New york will cost an estimated total of: 345 dollars for our 3-4 day stay, that is assuming a 45 dollar daily eating budget, and including metro passes and the price of parking. This does not include the price of gas due to the unforeseen nature of rising gas prices.
Thats all for now
See you soon
-Rebecca
